The loop

One year. Three problems.

01Survive

Heat, water, and clean air are your first economy. The ash doesn't attack you — it just settles on everything you forgot to cover.

02Rebuild

Every structure is placed by hand and salvaged from something that stood before. Buildings share warmth through connected walls — plan tight, or freeze wide.

03Decide

Strangers arrive with skills, mouths, and histories. Who you take in changes what your settlement becomes — and there's no morality meter keeping score.

The setting

The year after

The mountain went quiet eleven months ago. What's left is a valley under a foot of grey, a sky that hasn't fully cleared, and the people who stayed because leaving meant crossing what they couldn't see. You're one of them.

Ashfall isn't about the disaster. It's about the strange, hopeful year that follows one — thaw lines creeping back, seeds that take in poisoned soil, and the slow argument over what kind of place this should be when the sky finally opens.

Mechanics

What you actually do

No adjectives. Just the systems, as built.

  • >Shared-heat construction. Adjacent buildings pool warmth; layout is a survival decision, not decoration.
  • >Ash as terrain. It accumulates in real time, buries roads, filters into water, and can be dug, packed, or fired into brick.
  • >Named settlers, no clones. Every arrival has a trade, a need, and an opinion about your last major decision.
  • >Seasonal expeditions. Send small parties beyond the haze line for salvage; what they bring back — and who comes back — varies.
  • >A council you built. Late-game governance emerges from the settlers you chose. Their charter, their rules — sometimes against you.
  • >One year, then it ends. A full run is 8–12 hours. The valley's state on day 365 is your ending. Then you try a different year.

Made by five of us

We're Cinder Line — five people in three time zones who have been building Ashfall for three years, mostly on evenings that turned into mornings. This is our first game, and we'd rather ship something small and true than something big and hollow. If you wishlist it, a real person will notice, and it genuinely helps.
